Server room rack energy modeling tool

Mid size server rooms need open source tools to evaluate rack components for energy efficiency. Cornell has proposed using wireless antennae to replace fiber and ether connections. http://www.cs.cornell.edu/~jyshin/papers/ancs2012_shin.pdf This could save energy but may complicate rack design and security. Vendors have promoted Converged Network Adapters (CNA) and supporting switches to save energy. CNAs complicate rack ...more »

Dataset of Datasets!

My ideal dataset would be a complete dataset containing all of the Department of Energy Datasets. In looking for data for this contest it was difficult to navigate the many different websites and data formats currently used by different branches of the DOE. To be able to fully use the rich data available it would be very helpful to have a single dataset that contained each of the other datasets in a consistent and coordinated ...more »

Green Energy Tracker

Renewable energy production has been rapidly growing in the US in recent years. Energy consumers have opportunities to learn about renewable energy, but they do not have access to data about the actual renewable energy production or usage. Access to such data may help create awareness of when renewable energy is most available to consumers and when is the peak of energy usage occurs in general. (More details about application ...more »

Macro and Personal View of Energy Usage Across Functions

The average person has a siloed view of energy consumption. There is currently no a way to compare across different types of energy use. This makes it difficult to have a solid understanding of where and how to make an impact. It also leaves a large gap in personal and public understanding of energy consumption. There are some basic questions that we, the general public, cannot answer about energy usage. For example, ...more »

Working in harmony with the earth

The information regarding ground source heat pumps (gshp) is available in many data sets. The problem is not finding the information, the problem is that not enough people are aware of the technology. Gshp's are the most trustable, reliable and economical renewable technology on the market and yet few are aware of it. In some states the laws that prohibit drilling or the use of water sources make even considering going ...more »

Enabling Distributed Generation with Open Grid Data

Distributed renewable energy generation—particularly solar PV—has grown dramatically in the last few years, but developers continue to be obstructed by soft costs and implementation barriers. The federal government is already working to address this problem through DOE’s Sunshot Initiative—partially by encouraging utilities and local governments to streamline their solar permitting and approval processes—but there is ...more »

Leveraging Natural Gas Data

Improving the Green Button Initiative: The Green Button Initiative has made great strides in making electricity consumption more transparent, but consumption of natural gas is a blind spot. As a result, end-use natural gas data should be incorporated into the Green Button program to provide a clearer perspective on energy use. This strategy would leverage and complement existing Green Button data and ultimately provide ...more »

Energy Conscious Datasets

We need to bring awareness so that our employees, home owners, students, as citizen and our work force in commercial and industrial sector is Energy Conscious. Energy usage and cost equation should become our second nature. At a high level, we need to associate kWh, kW demand for the light fixtures, appliances, commercial and industrial equipment i.e. Compressors, Chillers etc. EnergyStar website already has very valuable ...more »

Predicting Potential for Residential Energy Efficiency Retrofit

The dataset I dream for is a representative sample of residential monthly energy billing data, ideally for both gas and electric, by climate zone for the United States. This dataset would ideally include 3-5 years of monthly data for a subsample of homes in each of the Department of Energy’s 8 defined defined climate zones and the “marine, dry, moist” subdivisions thereof. Ideally, this subsample would include 250,000-500,000 ...more »

A Real Time Residential Energy Dataset - "Wish List Dataset"

Wish List Dataset: A Real Time Residential Energy Dataset U.S Energy Information Administration, we have a wish. Could you make the Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) real time? Sounds impossible? A daunting task? It's not! Over open API's (format agnostic) you could drive change in the industry. Allow utilities to rethink the customers homes. Gain actionable insight that is already available but not being ...more »

Current, forecast, and historic generator output/capacity

Utility companies may have opposite objectives than the consumer. A utility may be content to generate electricity during peak hours, at high emissions, and sell to consumers at high rates. Consumers may be driven by different objectives. They may buy smart appliances which already respond to time-of-use pricing or emergency demand response signals from the utility. A new electricity generation web service directly from ...more »
