Enabling Distributed Generation with Open Grid Data

Distributed renewable energy generation—particularly solar PV—has grown dramatically in the last few years, but developers continue to be obstructed by soft costs and implementation barriers. The federal government is already working to address this problem through DOE’s Sunshot Initiative—partially by encouraging utilities and local governments to streamline their solar permitting and approval processes—but there is ...more »

Green Energy Tracker

Renewable energy production has been rapidly growing in the US in recent years. Energy consumers have opportunities to learn about renewable energy, but they do not have access to data about the actual renewable energy production or usage. Access to such data may help create awareness of when renewable energy is most available to consumers and when is the peak of energy usage occurs in general. (More details about application ...more »

Predicting Potential for Residential Energy Efficiency Retrofit

The dataset I dream for is a representative sample of residential monthly energy billing data, ideally for both gas and electric, by climate zone for the United States. This dataset would ideally include 3-5 years of monthly data for a subsample of homes in each of the Department of Energy’s 8 defined defined climate zones and the “marine, dry, moist” subdivisions thereof. Ideally, this subsample would include 250,000-500,000 ...more »

A Real Time Residential Energy Dataset - "Wish List Dataset"

Wish List Dataset: A Real Time Residential Energy Dataset U.S Energy Information Administration, we have a wish. Could you make the Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) real time? Sounds impossible? A daunting task? It's not! Over open API's (format agnostic) you could drive change in the industry. Allow utilities to rethink the customers homes. Gain actionable insight that is already available but not being ...more »

Server room rack energy modeling tool

Mid size server rooms need open source tools to evaluate rack components for energy efficiency. Cornell has proposed using wireless antennae to replace fiber and ether connections. http://www.cs.cornell.edu/~jyshin/papers/ancs2012_shin.pdf This could save energy but may complicate rack design and security. Vendors have promoted Converged Network Adapters (CNA) and supporting switches to save energy. CNAs complicate rack ...more »

Working in harmony with the earth

The information regarding ground source heat pumps (gshp) is available in many data sets. The problem is not finding the information, the problem is that not enough people are aware of the technology. Gshp's are the most trustable, reliable and economical renewable technology on the market and yet few are aware of it. In some states the laws that prohibit drilling or the use of water sources make even considering going ...more »

Why is my bill so high?

In most parts of the country, heating and cooling drives energy demand. Many companies are looking to explore the relationship between energy and weather and provide homeowners with actionable insights into understanding and controlling their utility spending. One area of focus is developing software applications that correlate energy use patterns measured by smart meters with easily obtained outside temperature observations. ...more »

Leveraging Natural Gas Data

Improving the Green Button Initiative: The Green Button Initiative has made great strides in making electricity consumption more transparent, but consumption of natural gas is a blind spot. As a result, end-use natural gas data should be incorporated into the Green Button program to provide a clearer perspective on energy use. This strategy would leverage and complement existing Green Button data and ultimately provide ...more »

Comprehensive Data on Wind Farm Production By Site

Our dream dataset: open data on the actual realized performance of all wind farms in the US, and/or any data it holds on actual measured wind resources at different sites, in any format the DOE chooses. We believe this data could be captured from Treasury/DOE records on production tax credit reporting, which were required of all US wind farms over the past few years. With this data, the wind industry in general, and ...more »

Standardize all energy data with US Census Boundaries

I propose that all datasets that are released from any governmental organization should be standardized in such a way such that they are easily relatable to the units of measurement that the US Census uses (preferably, counties, tracts, block-groups and blocks). At the moment, data provided by the Federal Government is near impossible to relate to small spatial units (for example a block-group contains ~1000s of people). ...more »
