Working in harmony with the earth

The information regarding ground source heat pumps (gshp) is available in many data sets. The problem is not finding the information, the problem is that not enough people are aware of the technology. Gshp's are the most trustable, reliable and economical renewable technology on the market and yet few are aware of it. In some states the laws that prohibit drilling or the use of water sources make even considering going ...more »

Smart Meter Interval Data: Availability Info Needed

Smart meter installations and pledges to support Green Button have been a big step in the right direction. Yet, at present, many utility consumers cannot access their data from newly installed meters. Ultimately, a meter is only "smart" if its data is available to its user. PROBLEM Information about smart meter "deployment" is usually narrowly focused on whether advanced ("smart") metering infrastructure (AMI) has ...more »

A Real Time Residential Energy Dataset - "Wish List Dataset"

Wish List Dataset: A Real Time Residential Energy Dataset U.S Energy Information Administration, we have a wish. Could you make the Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) real time? Sounds impossible? A daunting task? It's not! Over open API's (format agnostic) you could drive change in the industry. Allow utilities to rethink the customers homes. Gain actionable insight that is already available but not being ...more »

Comprehensive Data on Wind Farm Production By Site

Our dream dataset: open data on the actual realized performance of all wind farms in the US, and/or any data it holds on actual measured wind resources at different sites, in any format the DOE chooses. We believe this data could be captured from Treasury/DOE records on production tax credit reporting, which were required of all US wind farms over the past few years. With this data, the wind industry in general, and ...more »

Community Energy Use Mapping

City's and communities wishing to plan and implement community-scale energy reduction, energy efficiency, and clean energy system (ex. district energy, community-scale solar, etc.) deployment lack information on their community’s energy use. Efforts in NYC and San Francisco-using benchmarking laws for data collection-have been able to spatially understand the use of energy resources (ex. elec, ng, fuel oil) throughout ...more »

Dataset of Datasets!

My ideal dataset would be a complete dataset containing all of the Department of Energy Datasets. In looking for data for this contest it was difficult to navigate the many different websites and data formats currently used by different branches of the DOE. To be able to fully use the rich data available it would be very helpful to have a single dataset that contained each of the other datasets in a consistent and coordinated ...more »

Leveraging Natural Gas Data

Improving the Green Button Initiative: The Green Button Initiative has made great strides in making electricity consumption more transparent, but consumption of natural gas is a blind spot. As a result, end-use natural gas data should be incorporated into the Green Button program to provide a clearer perspective on energy use. This strategy would leverage and complement existing Green Button data and ultimately provide ...more »

Energy Conscious Datasets

We need to bring awareness so that our employees, home owners, students, as citizen and our work force in commercial and industrial sector is Energy Conscious. Energy usage and cost equation should become our second nature. At a high level, we need to associate kWh, kW demand for the light fixtures, appliances, commercial and industrial equipment i.e. Compressors, Chillers etc. EnergyStar website already has very valuable ...more »

Enabling Distributed Generation with Open Grid Data

Distributed renewable energy generation—particularly solar PV—has grown dramatically in the last few years, but developers continue to be obstructed by soft costs and implementation barriers. The federal government is already working to address this problem through DOE’s Sunshot Initiative—partially by encouraging utilities and local governments to streamline their solar permitting and approval processes—but there is ...more »

Standardize all energy data with US Census Boundaries

I propose that all datasets that are released from any governmental organization should be standardized in such a way such that they are easily relatable to the units of measurement that the US Census uses (preferably, counties, tracts, block-groups and blocks). At the moment, data provided by the Federal Government is near impossible to relate to small spatial units (for example a block-group contains ~1000s of people). ...more »

Voluntary Submission of Greenbutton Data

We propose creation of a publically available greenbutton data set by allowing utility customers to voluntarily upload relevant data along with key parameters related to building(home or business). The data set would include five relational databases as follows. 1) building description – a) location [zip code and or census tract]; b) year constructed; c) size; d) number of stories; e) structure type [wood frame, structural ...more »
