Real Time Pricing Extended to the Retail Energy Market

One of the biggest problems with the electric industry today is that it insulates the consumer from the "pain" of the wholesale energy market. This should at least be offered as an option to consumers. There is no technical barrier to prevent the implementation of a retail real-time price market to consumers. This should be offered to them as an alternative to the other tariff options they are given. Fifteen states also ...more »

Green Button 2.0 - "Best Idea for An Existing Dataset"

Green Button is a great way to get customers, developers and energy providers engaged and excited about the usage of energy. It enables change by allowing access to a dataset previously unavailable. But what if we could make access to this data faster. dataCapable is proposing a change. Push the API to the edge. We'd like to see it at the meter although we understand it's going to take a lot of work with the metering ...more »

Disaggregating form EIA-861

The Energy Information Administration portal to data is enormously useful for understanding the electric utility industry. The Form EIA-860, Annual Electric Generator Report; Form EIA-861, Annual Electric Power Industry Report; and Form EIA-923, Power Plant Operations Report are particularly useful for electric utility analysis analysis. I have used these data-files statistical analysis on utility performance by ownership ...more »

Intelligent PV Selection That Consider Usage, Rates, and Size

A key challenge facing residential and small business utility customers that are considering installing PV solar is accurately estimating the impact of various PV system sizes and utility rate structures on the payback period. Most utility customers struggle to perform cost calculations necessary to optimize their return on investment on solar projects. For a typical electrical customer problem becomes hopelessly complex ...more »

Thinking of Embodied Energy as a new form of currency

When we take out a loan for a house the most important thing we care about is the total cost and how fast can we pay that back. However, when it comes to things around us people seem to be completely unaware of how much energy it costs to make it. Embodied energy is defined as sum of all the energy required to produce goods or services. The concept can be useful in determining the effectiveness of energy producing/saving ...more »

kWh - Energy Conscious Country

In America, Energy Awareness is still a challenge. Department of Energy has done an excellent job of consolidating energy information. In particular, DSIREUSA.ORG is an excellent tool that identifies the incentives in the respective regional. What we lack is awareness and quantifying the energy usage through the day, week, weekends, and seasons, year over year by various energy users and our facilities energy profile ...more »

Interactive oil&gas infrastructure map

As an analyst in O&G, I have a need for a clear integral vision of the US oil and gas transport infrstructure including main existing and projeted pipelines, refineries and proseccing pants, LNG terminals etc. Geographical price spreads are crucial for today's oil and gas markets, while thay are mainly caused by fast changes in production profiles and unadequate transport capacities. Clear vision of how the oil moves ...more »

Big data idea

Hi United States of America.

You cuzzies should compile your demand by us suburb and location type and capacity of your plants and their marginal cost. use this data to do some sweet network optimisation so your low and high marginal cost plants are located optimally to reduce your transmission losses.

Although all you guys are pretty smart and I imagine of already do this.

Existing Dataset: Targeted Subsidies

As of recently, energy consumption at the residential level has become a hot topic of discussion within the United States. Although we have collectively made great progress over the past decade in becoming more environmentally conscious, we still have room for tremendous improvement. The U.S. government has recognized the need to become more energy efficient by creating subsidies in specific industries such as renewables, ...more »

Datafeed

I believe that many would appreciate any datafeed mechanism that would allow to automatically import and update sets of EIA data to MS Excel or similar using common ways of doing that.

Online Forum to Make Financial Energy Incentives More Effective

Households and businesses choose to be more efficient and “green” if extra effort and money leads to significant savings. The average professional may not be focused on reducing his or her carbon footprint but will be motivated by incentive. The Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy (DSIRE) addresses this issue by allowing residents and businesses to access financial energy incentives in order to save money ...more »
