Apps for Energy II »

Based on our success during the first round of the American Energy Data Challenge, we decided to build out Ohmconnect further. Ohmconnect provides the platform to allow residential homeowners to sell their energy back into the market. Homeowners are notified of "demand response" events, or a call to reduce electricity usage by turning off their A/C, heater, or appliances for 15 minutes. Using data from their existing smart meter, a homeowner's energy usage is tracked during demand response events and will be rewarded if they reduce during those times. No hardware is required. Our users can signup and immediately start earning cash while saving the environment.

Like mint.com does for finances, Ohmconnect visualizes and engages users with their household energy usage. Users compete and collaborate with their community through social media enabled games and leaderboards, while tracking their energy savings through points, levels, and badges. The points they accrue directly correlate to their cash earnings.

If you would like to sample the application with a test account, use username: example and password: ohmconnect

  1. Well done! Though I think it's a mistake to give people money when you could offer them a more compelling value proposition.

What would you suggest? We've been debating whether to donate the earnings to a charity or non-profit of some sort.

Is that what you had in mind?

  2. For users outside California, you can login via the Username / Password: "example" / "ohmconnect". Click on the "Already registered? Sign In" tab and you will be able to see where a user's energy is coming from and where it is going.
